TM 5-3805-260-24Fuel SystemThe sleeve metering fuel system is a pressure typefuel system. The name for the fuel system is from themethod used to control the amount of fuel sent to thecylinders. This fuel system has an Injection pump foreach cylinder of the engine. It also has a fuel transferpump on the front of the injection pump housing. Thegovernor is on the rear of the injection pump housing. The drive gear for the fuel transfer pump is on thefront of the camshaft for the injection pumps. The carrierfor the governor weights is bolted to the rear of thecamshaft for the injection pumps. The injection pumphousing has a bearing at each end to support thecamshaft. The camshaft for the sleeve metering fuelsystem is driven by the timing gears at the front of theengine. The injection pumps, lifters and rollers, and thecamshaft are all inside of the pump housing. The pumphousing and the governor housing are full of fuel attransfer pump pressure (fuel system pressure).CAUTIONDiesel fuel is the only lubrication for themoving parts in the transfer pump, injectionpump housing, and the governor. Theinjection pump housing must be full of fuelbefore turning the camshaft. This fuel system has governor weights, a thrustcollar and two governor springs. One governor spring isfor high idle and the other governor spring is for low idle.Rotation of the shaft for governor control, compressionof the governor springs, movement of connecting linkagein the governor and injection pump housing controls theamount of fuel sent to the engine cylinders.Fuel from fuel tank (7) is pulled by fuel transfer pump(11) through water separator (F) and fuel filter (9). Fromfuel filter (9) the fuel goes to housing for fuel injectionpumps (14). The fuel goes in housing (14) at the top andgoes through inside passage (20) to fuel transfer pump(11).SCHEMATIC OF FUEL SYSTEM1. Fuel priming pump (closed position). 2.
