BATTERY, STARTING AND CHARGING SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING PROCEDURES
MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
WARNING
Remove all jewelry, watch, rings, etc. prior to disconnecting cables from batter-
ies or other electrical source. Items can come in contact with battery or electrical
source and cause electrical shock. Failure to follow this warning may cause
injury or death.
Make sure wheels are chocked and bowl is lowered to ground for all tests. Fail-
ure to do so may cause injury or death.
Eye protection must be worn when performing maintenance where components
or particles could fly out during procedure. Failure to take precautions may
cause injury.
NOTE
The following tests require two mechanics one at control and the other at com-
ponent you are checking.

Electrolyte Is Boiling or

Check for physical damage to

2. If batteries don't appear to be damaged,
go to Test 2.

For maintainable batteries, check
1. If specific gravity is 1.225-1.235,
electrolyte specific gravity. Refer to
recharge battery. Refer to TM 9-6140-

2. If specific gravity is OK or battery is
maintenance free, go to Test 3.

Check charging voltage.
a. Place battery disconnect switch in
OFF position (TM 5-3805-248-10).
d. Connect black lead to ground.
e. Operate engine (TM 5-3805-248-
10).

Voltage range is 26.6 - 28.3 volts.
1. If not within specified range, replace
