VALVE COVER AND BASE REPLACEMENT - CONTINUED

CLEANING AND INSPECTION
WARNING
Solvent cleaning compound MIL-PRF-680 Type III is an environmentally compliant and low toxic
material. However, it may be irritating to the eyes and skin. Use protective gloves and goggles. Use in
well-ventilated areas. Keep away from open flames and other sources of ignition.
Particles blown by compressed air are hazardous. DO NOT exceed 15 psi (103 kPa) nozzle pressure
when drying parts with compressed air. Use a maximum of 30 psi (207 kPa) when cleaning compo-
nents. DO NOT direct compressed air against human skin. Failure to follow this warning may result in
injury or death. Make sure air stream is directed away from user and other personnel in the area. To pre-
vent injury, user must wear eye protection.
1.
Thoroughly clean all mating surfaces.
2.
Clean all parts with solvent and ensure that they are free of seal material, dirt and oil.
3.
Dry parts with compressed air.
4.
Visually inspect parts for cracks, heat deterioration or other damage. Replace damaged parts as necessary.
INSTALLATION
1.
If removed, install new adapter (3).
2.
If removed, install new plug (2).
3.
Cut two 57-1/4 in. (145.4 cm) lengths from bulk seal for new valve cover base seals (8 and 9). Apply silicone compound
and install seals in valve cover bases (6 and 10).
4.
Install valve cover bases (6 and 10) on cylinder head.
5.
Install fourteen bolts (7) and tighten to 10 lb-ft (14 Nm).
6.
Cut two 56-3/4 in. (144.2 cm) lengths from bulk seal for new valve cover seals (5 and 11). Apply silicone compound and
install seals in valve covers (1 and 4).
7.
Install valves cover (1 and 4) on valve cover bases (6 and 10).
8.
Install twelve bolts (12). Tighten bolts to 10 lb-ft (14 Nm).
9.
Install muffler and inlet manifold pipe (WP 0041 00).
10.
Install breather element (WP 0023 00).
